Schizophrenia is a debilitating mental disorder. The symptoms of the disease make it difficult for those afflicted with it to distinguish between the reality and the imaginary, thus, adversely impacting the way they conduct their daily activities. Due to its chronic nature, patients of schizophrenia find it difficult to handle relationships and thus, exhibit problems in day-to-day functioning.
While exploring schizophrenia disorder treatment, a group of researchers recently conducted a study titled “Interplay Among Psychopathologic Variables, Personal Resources, Context-Related Factors, and Real-life Functioning in Individuals With Schizophrenia” and observed that the ability to perform daily activities properly was necessary for the successful treatment of this disorder. The research, published online in the journal JAMA Psychiatry in February 2018, obtained results after conducting a multicenter cross-sectional network analysis on 26 university mental health treatment centers and clinics.
The scientists analyzed 921 individuals who were diagnosed with schizophrenia and dwelled in communities. The patients were administered antipsychotic therapy and advised outpatient treatment from March 1, 2012 to Sept. 30, 2013. The diagnosis of the patients was based on various factors, including psychopathologic variables, perception of social conditions, ability to function normally, neurocognition, real-life functioning, the ability to recover quickly from difficulties, feeling of disapproval and engagement during the course of employment.
The researchers observed that of the 740 patients with complete details on the 27 study measures, 22 percent had shown improvement with a score of mild or feeling better concerning eight major manifestations. The evaluation revealed how the ability to function normally and skills required for daily functioning were the most significant and highly interlinked nodes in the network. While the ability to function linked cognitive ability with daily life skills, the daily life skills node was connected with disorganization and expressive deficiencies.
Patients of schizophrenia need something more than antipsychotic medicinal drugs
The researchers described how the ability to function on an everyday basis helped link neurocognition and social understanding with real-life functioning nodes.
The researchers said that to manage the symptoms of schizophrenia, the patients needed something more than antipsychotic medicinal drugs. They said, “The network analysis might contribute to a shift from simpler, a priori models of established causal associations between variables to the recognition of the complex interdependence between disease-related factors, personal resources, environmental variables, and real-life functioning.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), schizophrenia affects nearly 1 percent of the American population. The researches studying pervasiveness of the disease in the U.S. brings to light the fact how most people get affected by the disease at an early age, i.e., much before the onset of puberty. Considering that patients tend to remain socially isolated, they also lose interest in daily activities.
Schizophrenia is a wasting disease that debilitates functioning of affected people, if not treated at the right time. Though health care providers recommend various medicines and therapies to treat or alleviate symptoms of the disorder, it is also necessary that affected patients indulge in regular physical exercise and healthy eating; avoid stressful situations; and pursue meaningful hobbies.
