Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week: Don’t surrender to workplace bullying

Posted on 10-20-2017 Posted in Depression - 0 Comments

Workplace bullying is a hard reality that affects day-to-day functioning of businesses adversely. The intensity and impact of bullying at workplace are different from what one undergoes in school, though the intent of causing hurt or humiliation remains the same. Workplace bullying involves abusive conduct that may include behavioral attitudes like threatening or intimidating, in addition to verbal abuse.

According to the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI), workplace bullying is “repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators.” Research shows how bullies in any workplace environmentare often the strongest and target better skilled colleagues. Manipulative behavior and controlling tendencies are characteristics of behavior exhibited by bullies who perceive every activity as a competition.

How does workplace bullying affect?

Persistent bullying can result in stress-related health problems. Most people, despite being bullied, continue to work under taxing circumstances for fear of losing their job or being tagged incompetent. This may have serious repercussions on their physiological and psychological health. According to  a June 2017 survey by the WBI, roughly 19 percent of Americans have been bullied at some point in their life and standing up to oppression by bullies does not help much as approximately 65 percent of victims lose their original jobs when they complain against subjugating behavior of their bosses.

Such behavior can make people feel low and sad that can lead to depression. If this problem is not diagnosed and the target continues to live in this environment for long, he or she can get trapped in the vicious cycle of mental problems like depression.

Unwarranted humiliating or offensive behavior has more disastrous effects than that meet the eyes. Performance of those workers who are bullied goes down as they feel demoralized owing to lack of confidence. Allowing perpetrators of bullying behavior to flourish indirectly encourages a toxic culture in an organization, affecting its overall businesses. All bullied employeesmay not bow down to harassment or discrimination. In that case, companies are at an increasedrisk of facing litigation issues.

It’s time to say no to bullying behavior

It’s time to stay strong and together against bullying practices. To coax people into speaking against bullying and to makeevery workplace safer, the Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week (FWBW) is observed every year. This year, it is observed from October 15-21. FWBW is a good opportunity for those facing bullying to discuss their trauma with friends and loved ones. Remember that being a mute spectator to workplace bullying or choosing to stay neutral in such matters only encourages such behavior.

Research hasindicated that unjustified tolerance of repetitive aggressive behavior can result in depression, is one of the most common mental illnesses affecting Americans across all sections of the society. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in 2015, more than 16 million people aged 18 years or older in the U.S., representing 6.7 percent of the adult population, had at least one major depressive episode in the previous year.
